Newman Notches Second Straight MCAC Men's Soccer Tournament Title
Wichita, Kan.- The
fourth-seeded Newman University Jets men's soccer team avenged a regular
season loss with a 2-0 victory over Bellevue University Saturday on their way to
capturing their second straight Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference
tournament title.
Jose Rovello netted his second game-winning goal is two days to open the scoring
for Newman. Rovello's goal was unassisted, as he hammered home a free kick in
the second half.
Tony Sapcutt scored the second goal of the afternoon on an assist from
All-America goalkeeper Martin Jones.
Jones had seven saves in the net for Newman as he notched his 11th shutout of
the season.
Newman will host Doane College on Tuesday, November 12 in the first round of the
Region IV tournament.
The 14 regional champions, as well as two at-large invitees, qualify for the
2002 NAIA National Men's Soccer Tournament, held November 21-26 in Bowling
Green, Ky.
