Six Newman Men Earn All-MCAC Soccer Recognition
Wichita, Kan.- Four Newman players were named to the 2002 All-Midlands Collegiate Conference First Team. Defenders Paul Harvey, Troon, Scotland, and Justin Cole, Wichita, earned first team honors, along with midfielders Martin Hughes, Glasgow, Scotland, and Brandon Clevenger, Wichita.
Defender Luke Knoblauch, Wichita, and forward Stephen Ralos, Brisabane, Australia, were named to the All-MCAC second team.
Cole, Harvey and Knoblauch were stalwarts on a defensive unit that allowed only 11 goals all year. They also combined to contribute 11 goals and 7 assists to the Jets offense.
Hughes and Clevenger were the motor in the Jets midfield all year. They contributed both on offense and defense, winning tackles and sending passes up front to put the Jets in the attack.
Ralos led the Jets in scoring with 10 goals and 4 assists on the year. He worked up front knocking down head balls for others to move into the attack.
Harvey, Hughes, Cole and Ralos each earned conference player of the week awards during the regular season.
Newman finished the season
at 14-4-3 overall, 4-2 in the MCAC. They were ranked #21 in the final NAIA National
men's soccer rankings.
Their record earned them a fourth place finish in the conference. They captured
their third consecutive MCAC Tournament title by defeating Park and Bellevue,
avenging both regular season conference defeats.
